Getting to Know You...
Each month we will "Get to Know" one of our fantastic clients a little better by plonking them in our interview chair, (think a comfy chaise lounge rather than the famous Mastermind chair) and asking them to share their thoughts, feelings and experiences with us by taking our not too serious questionnaire. This month we "Get to Know"...
NAME: Hjalmar Nordén
Years with Stage Centre: One!
If you were marooned on a desert island what would be your one luxury item you'd bring with you and why?
Luxury item? Something that plays music, like a hi-fi, solar powered, weather resistant radio of sorts. Music changes everything.
On a scale of 1-10 with 1 being absolutely not and 10 being definitely, how do you feel about pineapple on pizza?
First Acting Job – Last Acting Job?
As far as I can recall, the first acting job I got paid for was a VO job for the International Institute for Industrial and Environmental Economics at Lund University for their Young Masters Programme. Last thing I wrapped up was a few green screen shots as the Emperor, Giant and Undersea King to be used as video pop-ups in the show Sinbad the Sailor by Spontaneous Productions, Sydenham.
What would your Super Power be?
Making people hug each other, and it would be reaching across worlds. Like, even if I watched some people on the news being very upset with each other, I could make them hug for a bit.
How do you relax?
Getting absolutely engrossed in a good video game or book.
Who would play you in the film of your life?
You are up on stage to collect your best Actor Oscar...You’ve thanked the usual ie Family, Agent, Film crew etc….Who else do you thank?
My high school mentor and biology teacher, Ola Svensson. I was going through rough times and he understood and believed in me, even when I didn’t myself.
Where were you trained?
Markaryds Folkhögskola, Musikteaterskolan i Bjärnum and Kulturama, Stockholm.
What is your most treasured possession?
My mind. And even that, I feel, is just borrowed.
What one piece of advice would you give your younger Acting/Performing self?
Only the ones who truly appreciate your qualities are the ones you will really want to work with.
Please tell us of a career highlight?
Getting wonderful feedback for the role of Captain Pierre Bouchardon, the interrogator of “Mata Hari”, in Eye of Day: The Mata Hari Story at Upstairs at the Sydenham Centre. Nasty piece of work that challenged my acting chops down to the marrow.
Performance role model?
Do you have a favorite genre of the Performing Arts? Why?
Absurd, satiric stage plays. Think Edward Albee. I love it when things are put on its edge and our humanity is exposed and poked at. It leaves us naked and I believe it creates a high degree of relatability for the audience.
Hindsight is a wonderful thing...Anything you would do differently, career-wise?
I’ve often wished that I’d started singing earlier, as a child, at any type of level. Unfortunately, I thought that I’d have been made fun of. Hard to say! Maybe I wouldn’t have had the same hunger if I had! And I’m bloody grateful about my hunger.
Many thanks to Hjalmar for his answers.
